Bioscience firm Biorbyt sponsors the Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech

Cambridge-based Biorbyt, one of Europe’s largest bio-reagents supplier, is to sponsor the ninth edition of the Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech 2023 list, published by equality charity Diversity UK. The list celebrates the outstanding contribution made by British Asians to this country’s digital economy.

Tech faces new challenges, but we are there to support the ecosystem

At Biorbyt, we dare to do things differently,” said company Co-CEO, Qun Yang, “so when Diversity UK approached us to support the Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech 2023 initiative, we were among the first to step up. As a nominee myself, I know how important it is to highlight new start-up ventures and spotlight the significant contribution that British Asians make to the tech economy.

Yes, the past six months for the tech industry have been difficult but healthtech remains resilient. Biorbyt is one of Europe’s largest bio-reagent supplier, providing antibodies, small molecules, ELISA kits and protein products and services to the global scientific community. During the pandemic, we stepped up by collaborating with the world’s finest researchers and academics to develop products of the highest quality for Covid-19 antibody research.

Now we are delighted to be stepping up again to support the entrepreneurship ecosystem, via the Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech 2023 initiative, to promote and showcase healthtech innovators.”

Focus on HealthTech

At Diversity UK, we are delighted to be supported by the team at Biorbyt. The relationship flourished when we co-hosted the ‘Investing in HealthTech Founders’ panel debate for International Women’s Day in March this year – we are impressed with their team’s ‘can do’ approach and deep sector experience”, said Lopa Patel MBE, Chair of Diversity UK, publisher of the Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech list.

In last year’s Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech 2023 list, it was pleasing that the HealthTech & Life Sciences sector (10%) and technologies like AI (16%) were well represented, alongside Greentech (13%) Business (15%), Investors (15%) and the evergreen Start-ups (31%) categories, added Lopa, “and in addition to dominating the list for a second year at 51%, women were also well represented in all the Top 5 categories the list showcases with 4 women highlighted in the startups category, which has historically been male-dominated. Our Chairman’s Award winner was a woman and we were also pleased to recognise twenty Asian Tech Pioneers in 2022 for their leadership of change and support for the tech sector and entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Undoubtedly, this year the focus will be on resilience, and long-term company building and we look forward to seeing more of nominees’ contributions to the tech ecosystem – especially in FinTech, the UK’s strongest startup sector, with more than 1,400 high-growth fintech companies, 20 fintech unicorns (around half of the UK’s billion-dollar startups), and more venture capital investment than any other industry, and in HealthTech, where solving some of the most urgent challenges to living well for longer is a priority – as we move steadily towards the UK becoming a ‘science superpower’.”

The aim is to showcase the wealth of talent on the British digital scene; from startup founders, creatives, social entrepreneurs, technologists, venture capital and angel investors to the policy makers and game changers. The key objective is to address the perceived lack of diversity in the tech sector by highlighting the business models, innovation, funding and support networks being created by these Asian digital entrepreneurs. Shortlisted nominees not only gain considerable media attention, they also make valuable connections to help fund or scale their business; are part of a network of innovators; can pitch their ventures at Tech Showcases; are recognised in industry publications and go on to win other competitions and awards.

In addition to the Chairman’s Award (selected by the Chair of the Judging Panel) and Asian Tech Pioneers (selected by the Judging Panel); Top 5 individuals are highlighted in five categories.
