Nesta & ACE launch the Digital Culture 2019 Report

Co-commissioned by Arts Council England (ACE) and Nesta, the Digital Culture 2019 report was launched on Tuesday 11th February 2020 at Nesta’s HQ in London. Digital Culture 2019 is the fifth iteration of a longitudinal survey which tracks how arts, culture and museum organisations are using digital technology across all areas of their operations. The report examines key trends from the fieldwork and explores what the enablers and barriers to further progress in this field may be.

Attendees at the event heard from Arts Council England’s Executive Director, Enterprise and Innovation, Francis Runacres, Nesta’s Creative Economy team and research and strategy consultancy MTM London, who carried out the Digital Culture fieldwork, alongside representatives from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Space. Presentations were followed a panel discussion featuring professionals from the arts, culture and heritage sectors, who reflected on the survey findings and discussed what’s next in terms of digital development.

Digital Culture Compass

The event also saw the the launch of the Digital Culture Compass, a tool developed by The Space, Culture24, The Audience Agency and the University of Leicester on behalf of Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which will support organisations in the arts, cultural and heritage sectors to embed digital best practices in their workplaces.

The Digital Culture Compass is an online tool comprising of the Charter, a guiding set of principles for organisations to consider when planning their use of technology, and the Tracker, a self-help tool that breaks down the work of organisations into a series of focused areas for them to assess themselves against. Some of these areas are generic (marketing, strategy and governance, finance) and some are more bespoke to the cultural sector (programming, collections management, talent development). Under each sits a number of questions that help organisations drill down into the detail.
