Thaslima Begum
Thaslima Begum is an award-winning human rights journalist turned social entrepreneur. While interviewing garment workers in Bangladesh, she saw the urgent need to address the human rights challenges prevalent in the fashion industry. However, factories often lack the working capital to drive sustainable changes. She founded TEEK TAKA, an ethical fintech platform focused on improving labour conditions in global supply chains. TEEK TAKA measures compliance to labour standards, such as fair wages, contract hours and safe working conditions, and incentivises factories to adopt better practices in return for access to cheaper and faster financing. The name TEEK TAKA is a play on the common Bengali phrase teek tako, meaning to stay good. Adapting tako to taka (Bangladesh's national currency), TEEK TAKA translates to good money, and perfectly summarises the ethos of the company. Passionate about human rights, Thaslima is interested in leveraging technology to address worker exploitation. She is a fellow of the UK Finance Innovation Lab, and was recently recognised by Cambridge University as an Innovator for Sustainable Fashion.
